Definition

Characteristics of sound, which is produced by vibrations and travels as waves through a medium such as air, water, or solids. Sounds vary in loudness (volume) and pitch, and they cannot travel through a vacuum.

Worked examples

A drum vibrates when struck, producing sound waves that travel through air to your ears.
The vibrating drumhead pushes air molecules, creating waves that carry the sound.
A whistle has high pitch (fast vibrations); a tuba has low pitch (slow vibrations).
Pitch depends on how quickly the source vibrates—faster vibrations make higher sounds.
Sound travels through water faster than air, but cannot travel through the vacuum of space.
Sound needs particles in a medium to vibrate; empty space has no medium.
