Definition

The characteristics of air, the mixture of gases that surrounds the Earth. Air has mass, takes up space, can be compressed, and exerts pressure; it is mainly nitrogen and oxygen and is organised into atmospheric layers.

Worked examples

A sealed syringe full of air can be pushed down, compressing the air into a smaller volume.
Air can be compressed because the gas particles have space between them that can be reduced.
An inflated balloon has greater mass than the same deflated balloon when measured on a sensitive balance.
This shows air has mass—the added air particles inside increase the total mass.
