Definition
A form of energy that travels as electromagnetic waves and allows us to see. Light can be reflected, absorbed, or refracted, and plants capture it during photosynthesis to make food.
Worked examples
A solar panel absorbs light energy and converts it into electrical energy to power devices.
Light energy can be transformed into other forms of energy we use.
A leaf captures light energy during photosynthesis, storing it as chemical energy in glucose.
Plants use light energy to make food, converting it into stored chemical energy.
White light passing through a prism refracts into a rainbow of colors.

Common mistakes
- Light energy is only visible light that humans can see. → Light energy includes all electromagnetic waves, including ultraviolet and infrared. Visible light is just one part of the electromagnetic spectrum; UV and IR are also light energy.
- When light is absorbed by a black shirt, the light energy disappears. → The light energy is converted to heat energy. Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed from one form to another.
- Plants need light energy only during the day to survive. → Plants use stored chemical energy at night after capturing light energy during the day. Photosynthesis stores light energy as glucose, which plants use continuously for respiration.
