Definition
The four periods of the year—spring, summer, autumn, and winter—caused by the tilt of the Earth's axis as it orbits the Sun. The tilt changes how directly sunlight strikes each hemisphere, producing yearly cycles of temperature and daylight.
Worked examples
In December, the Northern Hemisphere tilts away from the Sun, so sunlight spreads over a larger area and days are shorter—it's winter.
Less direct sunlight and shorter days mean colder temperatures in winter.
In June, the Northern Hemisphere tilts toward the Sun, so sunlight is more concentrated and days are longer—it's summer.
More direct sunlight and longer days produce the warmest temperatures of the year.
When it's summer in the Northern Hemisphere, the Southern Hemisphere tilts away from the Sun and experiences winter.
The two hemispheres always have opposite seasons because of Earth's tilt.
Common mistakes
- Seasons are caused by Earth being closer to or farther from the Sun. → Seasons are caused by the tilt of Earth's axis, not distance from the Sun. Earth's orbit is nearly circular; the tilt changes how directly sunlight hits each hemisphere.
- Summer happens when Earth is closest to the Sun. → Summer happens when a hemisphere tilts toward the Sun. Earth is actually farthest from the Sun during Northern Hemisphere summer.
- All places on Earth experience the same four seasons. → Tropical regions near the equator have wet and dry seasons, not the same four-season pattern. The equator receives nearly direct sunlight year-round, so temperature variation is minimal.

You'll apply seasons when studying climate zones, ecosystems and animal migration, agriculture cycles, and later in Earth science when exploring planetary orbits and axial tilt on other worlds.
