Definition

The regular changes in weather, daylight hours, temperature, and the behaviour of living things that occur as the seasons cycle through the year. These changes are caused by the tilt of the Earth as it orbits the Sun.

Worked examples

In summer, the Northern Hemisphere tilts toward the Sun, creating longer days, warmer temperatures, and active plant growth.
The tilt causes one hemisphere to receive more direct sunlight and longer daylight hours.
In winter, the same hemisphere tilts away from the Sun, resulting in shorter days, colder temperatures, and many animals hibernating.
The opposite tilt means less direct sunlight, shorter days, and colder conditions for that hemisphere.
During spring and fall, the Earth's tilt is sideways to the Sun, giving moderate temperatures and roughly equal day and night lengths.
Transitional seasons occur when neither hemisphere is tilted significantly toward or away from the Sun.

Common mistakes

  • Seasons happen because Earth's distance from the Sun changes throughout the year.Seasons are caused by the tilt of Earth's axis, not its distance from the Sun. Earth's orbit is nearly circular; the tilt determines which hemisphere gets more direct sunlight.
  • When it's summer in North America, it's also summer everywhere on Earth.When it's summer in the Northern Hemisphere, it's winter in the Southern Hemisphere. The two hemispheres tilt in opposite directions relative to the Sun, so they have opposite seasons.
