Definition

The results of a planet revolving, or orbiting, around the Sun. Combined with the tilt of its axis, a planet's revolution produces the yearly cycle of seasons and changing lengths of day.

Worked examples

Earth's \(365.25\)-day orbit around the Sun, combined with its \(23.5^\circ\) axial tilt, creates the four seasons.
The tilt means different hemispheres receive varying sunlight intensity as Earth revolves.
When the Northern Hemisphere tilts toward the Sun during revolution, it experiences summer; six months later it tilts away and has winter.
Revolution moves Earth to different positions, changing which hemisphere gets more direct sunlight.

Common mistakes

  • Seasons happen because Earth is closer to the Sun in summer and farther in winter.Seasons result from axial tilt during revolution, not distance from the Sun. Earth is actually closest to the Sun in January (Northern winter). Tilt controls seasons.
  • Revolution causes day and night.Rotation on its axis causes day and night; revolution causes seasons. Revolution is the year-long orbit; rotation is the 24-hour spin producing day/night.
