Definition
The results of a planet spinning, or rotating, on its axis. The Earth's rotation causes the cycle of day and night and the apparent movement of the Sun and stars across the sky.
Worked examples
Earth completes one full rotation in 24 hours, causing the Sun to appear to rise in the east and set in the west.
The Sun's apparent motion across the sky is a direct result of Earth's rotation on its axis.
When it is noon in New York, the Sun is overhead there, but it is nighttime on the opposite side of Earth.
Half of Earth faces the Sun (day) while the other half faces away (night) due to rotation.
Common mistakes
- The Sun moves around Earth to create day and night. → Earth rotates on its axis, making the Sun appear to move across the sky. The Sun is stationary relative to Earth; rotation causes the apparent movement.
- Earth's rotation causes the seasons. → Earth's tilt and revolution around the Sun cause seasons; rotation causes day and night. Rotation creates the daily cycle, not seasonal changes.
- Stars are stationary in the sky throughout the night. → Stars appear to move across the sky due to Earth's rotation. Like the Sun, stars appear to rise and set because Earth is spinning.
Where you'll use it next
You'll apply rotation effects when studying time zones, celestial navigation, and the Coriolis effect in weather systems. Later courses use it to explain satellite orbits and astronomical observations.
