Definition
The two main motions of the Earth: its rotation on its axis, which causes day and night, and its revolution around the Sun once a year, which together with the axial tilt produces the seasons.
Worked examples
Earth rotates \(360^\circ\) on its axis every 24 hours, giving us day when facing the Sun and night when facing away.
Rotation creates the day-night cycle as different parts of Earth turn toward and away from the Sun.
Earth completes one revolution around the Sun in 365.25 days while tilted \(23.5^\circ\), causing summer in the Northern Hemisphere when tilted toward the Sun.
Revolution plus axial tilt produces seasons as different hemispheres receive varying sunlight amounts through the year.
Common mistakes
- Earth's revolution causes day and night → Earth's rotation on its axis causes day and night Revolution is the yearly orbit around the Sun; rotation is the daily spin that creates day and night.
- Summer happens when Earth is closest to the Sun → Summer happens when your hemisphere tilts toward the Sun Distance varies only slightly; axial tilt determines which hemisphere gets more direct sunlight and longer days.
