Definition

The apparent path of the Sun across the sky from east to west during the day. This movement is caused by the Earth rotating on its axis, not by the Sun itself moving, and it produces shadows that change through the day.

Worked examples

At sunrise, the Sun appears in the eastern sky. By noon, it is high overhead. By sunset, it has moved to the western horizon.
This daily east-to-west path happens because Earth rotates counterclockwise when viewed from above the North Pole.
A stick's shadow points west in the morning, is shortest at noon, and points east in the afternoon.
The changing shadow direction and length trace the Sun's apparent movement across the sky.

Common mistakes

  • The Sun orbits around the Earth once per day.The Earth rotates on its axis once per day, making the Sun appear to move. The Sun's movement across the sky is apparent, not real — Earth's rotation causes it.
  • The Sun rises in the west and sets in the east.The Sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Earth rotates west to east, so the Sun appears to travel east to west across the sky.
  • The Sun is directly overhead at noon everywhere on Earth.The Sun is only directly overhead at noon in the tropics at certain times of year. Your latitude and the season determine how high the Sun climbs at noon.
