Definition
Devices used to study space, such as telescopes that gather light from distant objects, satellites that orbit Earth, and space probes that travel to other planets. These tools extend human observation far beyond what the eye can see.
Worked examples
The Hubble Space Telescope orbits Earth above the atmosphere, capturing sharp images of galaxies billions of light-years away.
A telescope gathers and focuses light, letting us see objects too faint or distant for the naked eye.
The Voyager 1 space probe, launched in 1977, has traveled beyond our solar system, sending back data about interstellar space.
