Definition
Natural objects found in space, such as stars, planets, moons, asteroids, and comets. Studying celestial bodies and their movements helps us understand the structure and history of the universe.
Worked examples
The Sun is a star, Earth is a planet, and the Moon is a natural satellite orbiting Earth.
Each represents a different type of celestial body with distinct characteristics and roles in space.
Halley's Comet orbits the Sun every 76 years, while the asteroid belt contains millions of rocky bodies between Mars and Jupiter.
Comets and asteroids are smaller celestial bodies that also orbit stars but differ in composition and behavior.
Common mistakes
- The International Space Station is a celestial body → Only natural objects like stars, planets, and moons are celestial bodies Celestial bodies must be naturally occurring; human-made satellites and spacecraft don't count.
- All celestial bodies emit their own light like stars do → Only stars emit their own light; planets and moons reflect light from stars Most celestial bodies are visible because they reflect starlight, not because they produce it.
- Moons only orbit planets → Moons can orbit planets, dwarf planets, and even asteroids Any natural satellite orbiting another celestial body is considered a moon, regardless of what it orbits.
