Definition
Tools and devices used to explore and study space, such as satellites that orbit Earth, telescopes that gather distant light, and probes that travel to other worlds. This technology extends human observation far beyond Earth.
Worked examples
The Hubble Space Telescope orbits Earth at \(547 \) km\(\) altitude, capturing images of galaxies billions of light-years away.
A telescope in space avoids Earth's atmosphere, gathering clearer light from distant objects.
The Voyager 1 probe, launched in 1977, has traveled beyond our solar system and still sends data back to Earth.
Probes carry instruments to places humans cannot go, extending our reach across the solar system.
GPS satellites orbit Earth and transmit signals that your phone uses to pinpoint your location.
Satellites provide services like navigation, weather monitoring, and communication from orbit.
Common mistakes
- Space technology only includes rockets and spacecraft that carry astronauts. → Space technology includes satellites, telescopes, probes, and robotic tools—most never carry people. Most space missions are uncrewed; satellites and probes do the majority of exploration and observation.
- Telescopes in space work the same as those on Earth, just higher up. → Space telescopes avoid atmospheric distortion and can detect wavelengths blocked by Earth's atmosphere. Being above the atmosphere lets space telescopes see infrared, ultraviolet, and X-rays that ground telescopes cannot.
