Definition
The large-scale organisation of the universe, from planets and stars up to galaxies and clusters of galaxies separated by vast distances. Understanding this structure helps explain the scale and history of the cosmos.
Worked examples
Earth orbits the Sun (a star); the Sun is one of \(~10^{11}\) stars in the Milky Way galaxy; the Milky Way is one of billions of galaxies in the observable universe.
This hierarchy shows how structure scales from planetary systems to stellar collections to galaxy clusters.
The Local Group contains the Milky Way, Andromeda, and about 50 smaller galaxies bound by gravity, spanning millions of light-years.
Galaxy clusters are the next level up, gathering dozens to thousands of galaxies separated by enormous distances.
Common mistakes
- Galaxies are evenly spread throughout the universe. → Galaxies cluster in groups and superclusters with huge voids between them. The large-scale structure is lumpy, not uniform — matter groups gravitationally into filaments and walls.
- The solar system is the same thing as a galaxy. → A galaxy contains billions of stars; our solar system is just one tiny part of the Milky Way galaxy. Scale matters: a galaxy is millions of times larger than a single star system.
