Definition
Regular events that repeat each day as a result of Earth's rotation, such as sunrise, sunset, and predictable changes in temperature and shadows. Recognising daily patterns helps learners connect observations to the movement of the Sun.
Worked examples
The Sun appears in the eastern sky each morning, travels across the sky, and sets in the west each evening.
This daily pattern happens because Earth rotates once every 24 hours.
A shadow cast by a flagpole is longest in the early morning, shortest at noon, and longest again in the late afternoon.
Shadow length and direction change predictably as the Sun's position shifts through the day.
Common mistakes
- The Sun moves around Earth each day → Earth rotates, making the Sun appear to move across the sky Earth's rotation causes the daily pattern, not the Sun orbiting Earth.
- Temperature is warmest at noon when the Sun is highest → Temperature usually peaks 2-3 hours after noon The ground and air take time to warm up even after the Sun reaches its highest point.
