Grade 5 Math in New Brunswick
Grade 5 math in New Brunswick covers a wide range of topics that build on earlier grades and prepare students for Grade 6. Grade 5 introduces equivalent fractions and comparing fractions with like and unlike denominators. Students represent decimals concretely, pictorially, and symbolically, and connect decimal representations to fractional equivalents. They compare and order decimals using benchmarks and place value, and add and subtract decimals to the thousandths place.
Patterns and Equations
Students identify and extend patterns to predict subsequent elements. They also solve one-step equations with whole number solutions, laying the groundwork for algebraic thinking in later grades.
Measurement and Geometry
Grade 5 measurement topics include estimating and measuring lengths in millimeters and kilometers, working with rectangular prisms and volume, and relating milliliters to liters. Geometry covers parallel, intersecting, perpendicular, vertical, and horizontal lines, as well as classifying shapes like rectangles, squares, trapezoids, parallelograms, and rhombuses by their attributes.
