Discover Amazing Changes From Past to Present
You will learn how to compare the past and present by exploring old photos, toys, and everyday objects to see how life has changed over time.
Introduction
You will learn about changes over time by looking at old photos and objects from the past. When you compare how things were long ago to how they are today, you can see amazing differences! Your grandparents lived very differently when they were your age.
How Things Were Different Long Ago
Long ago, people wore different clothes than you do today. They wore long dresses and fancy hats. Men wore formal suits every day. You can see this in old photos that your family might have.
People traveled differently too. Before cars were made, people rode horses and used wagons to go places. Your great-grandparents might have walked to school instead of riding in a car like you do.
Toys and Games From the Past
Children long ago played with wooden toys like toy horses. They did not have tablets or video games like you have today. Some toys like blocks have stayed the same - children long ago played with blocks just like you do now!
You can learn about Then and Now by comparing old toys to new toys. This helps you understand how some things change while others stay the same.
Daily Life in the Past
Kitchens were very different long ago. People used wooden iceboxes to keep food cold before electricity was invented. They mixed cookie dough by hand with wooden spoons instead of using electric mixers like your family uses today.
Children wrote with feather quill pens instead of pencils. They had to dip the feather in ink to write! This shows you how Daily Life Comparisons help us understand the past.
Key Terms & Definitions

Fun Activities to Try
You can explore changes over time by looking at old family photos with your parents or grandparents. Ask them to tell you stories about how things were different when they were young.
Try to find old objects in your house like wooden spoons or old toys. Compare them to the things you use today to see how they are different or the same.
What You Already Know
You already know the difference between yesterday and today. Now you will learn about much longer time periods - like when your grandparents were children! You can use your understanding of My Life Events to help you think about time.
