Discover How Daily Life Changed From Past to Present
You will compare how people lived long ago with how we live today, discovering differences in cooking, traveling, and daily activities.
Introduction
You will discover how daily life was different long ago compared to how you live today! People cooked, traveled, and communicated in very different ways. You can compare the past and present by looking at old photos and hearing stories from your family. This helps you understand how Changes Over Time affect how we live.
How People Cooked Food
Long ago, people cooked food over wood fires in their yards or by fireplaces. They used heavy iron pots that could handle the hot flames. Today, you cook food on electric stoves in your kitchen. You can turn a knob to control the heat right away!
Your family probably uses lightweight pots and pans made of different materials. This shows how cooking became much easier and safer over time. You can see these differences when you look at Historical Photos of old kitchens.
How People Traveled
Long ago, children rode in horse-drawn wagons to get to school. The horses pulled the wagons slowly on bumpy dirt roads. This took a very long time! Today, you probably ride a school bus or car to school.
People also walked long distances carrying their things in bags. Now your family can drive cars on smooth highways to reach places in hours instead of days. You can learn more about different ways to travel in Types of Transportation.
How People Read and Communicated
Long ago, children read books by candlelight because there were no electric lights. The candles helped them see the pages at night. Today, you read books using electric lamps that plug into the wall.
People also sent messages by writing letters that took days to arrive. Now you can use phones to talk to family members far away right away! This shows how communication became much faster over time.
