What Is the Constitution?

The Constitution is a very special document that tells how our government should work. You can think of it like a rulebook that explains what leaders can and cannot do. It was written in 1787 by the Declaration of Independence leaders who wanted to create fair laws for everyone.

When you visit a museum, you might see the Constitution behind special glass because it's so important and old. It has fancy handwriting and many signatures at the bottom from the people who agreed to these rules long ago.

How the Constitution Protects You

The Constitution protects your rights and freedoms every day. Rights are special things that belong to every person, like being able to speak your thoughts or practice your religion. The Constitution makes sure these freedoms are protected for everyone.
