Discover the Leaders Who Help Your Community Every Day
You will learn about the three levels of government and how mayors, governors, and presidents help communities in different ways.
Introduction
You live in a community with many different leaders who help make your life better. These leaders work at different levels of government to solve problems and make rules. You will learn about three important levels: local government for your town, state government for your state, and national government for your whole country.
Three Levels of Government
Your community has three levels of government that work together. Each level has different leaders who help with different sized problems. You will discover how these levels work together to help you and your family.
The local level includes your town or city. Your state level covers your whole state. The national level covers your entire country. Each level has special leaders who make important decisions.
Local Government Leaders
Your town or city has a mayor who leads the local government. You can think of the mayor as the person who helps fix problems in your neighborhood. When you see a broken swing at the playground, the mayor is the right person to help fix it.
Local government also includes other helpers who work with the mayor. They help keep your parks clean, fix streets, and make sure your community is a good place to live. You might visit town hall to meet these local leaders.
State Government Leaders
Your state has a governor who leads the state government. The governor helps with bigger problems that affect your whole state. You can think of the governor as the person who helps with things like highways and state parks.
State government makes rules that everyone in your state must follow. These rules help keep people safe and make sure everyone is treated fairly. The governor works with other state leaders to solve problems that are too big for just one town.
National Government Leaders
Your whole country has a president who leads the national government. The president helps with problems that affect everyone in the country. You can think of the president as the person who makes decisions for all Americans.
National government makes laws that everyone in the country must follow. These laws help keep all Americans safe and protect their rights. The president works with other national leaders to solve problems that affect the entire country.
