Definition
Practices that reduce water use and protect water supplies, such as fixing leaks, using water-efficient appliances, and avoiding waste. Conserving water helps ensure there is enough clean water for people and ecosystems.
Worked examples
Fixing a leaking faucet that drips once per second saves about 11,000 liters of water per year.
Small leaks waste huge amounts over time — this is a direct water conservation practice.
Installing a low-flow showerhead reduces water use from 20 liters/min to 9 liters/min without losing pressure.

Common mistakes
- Water conservation only matters in dry climates or during droughts. → Water conservation is important everywhere to protect freshwater supplies and ecosystems. Even areas with rain face water quality and distribution challenges; conservation helps all regions.
- Leaving the tap running while brushing teeth conserves water because it keeps pipes clear. → Turn off the tap while brushing — running water for 2 minutes wastes about 15 liters. Letting water run unnecessarily is waste, not conservation; pipes stay clear from regular use.
- Water conservation means not using water at all. → Water conservation means using water efficiently and avoiding waste, not eliminating use. The goal is smart use — meeting needs while protecting supply, not stopping all water use.
