Sustainable Practices

Elementary School

Definition

Ways of living and using resources that protect the environment over the long term. They reduce waste and pollution and conserve resources so that ecosystems and communities can thrive into the future.

Worked examples

A family installs solar panels to generate electricity and collects rainwater for their garden instead of using city water.
Both practices reduce fossil fuel use and conserve fresh water for the long term.
A farmer rotates crops each season and plants cover crops to restore nutrients naturally instead of relying only on fertilizers.
This protects soil health and reduces chemical runoff, keeping the farm productive for future generations.

Common mistakes

  • Recycling one bottle makes my habits sustainable.Sustainable practices are ongoing patterns, not one-time actions. Sustainability means consistent choices over time that reduce overall impact, not isolated good deeds.
  • Sustainable means it never uses any resources.Sustainable means using resources at a rate that lets them renew or stay available long-term. All living requires resources; sustainability is about balance, not zero use.
  • Only environmental protection counts as sustainable.Sustainable practices also support communities and economies so people can thrive long-term. True sustainability balances environmental, social, and economic health together.

Where you'll use it next

You'll apply sustainable practices when studying ecosystems and human impact, resource management in Earth science, and evaluating energy sources and policy in environmental science and civics.
