Definition
The effects of human activity on the environment and living things, both positive and negative. Activities such as farming, building, and burning fuels can cause pollution and habitat loss, while conservation efforts can repair and protect ecosystems.
Worked examples
A factory releases waste into a river, killing fish and making water unsafe for drinking.
Negative human impact through pollution harming aquatic life and water quality.
A community plants native trees in a cleared forest area to restore wildlife habitat.
Positive human impact through conservation, repairing ecosystem damage.

Common mistakes
- All human impact on the environment is negative. → Human impact can be positive (conservation, restoration) or negative (pollution, habitat loss). Conservation efforts like protected parks and reforestation are examples of positive human impact.
- Only big industries cause human impact; individual actions don't matter. → Individual actions like recycling, conserving water, and reducing waste contribute to overall human impact. Collective individual choices add up to significant environmental effects, positive or negative.
- Human impact only affects animals and plants, not people. → Human impact affects all living things, including people through air quality, water safety, and climate. Pollution and habitat destruction directly harm human health, food supply, and living conditions.
