Definition

Long-term shifts in temperature and weather patterns across the globe. Recent rapid change is driven largely by human activities such as burning fossil fuels, which release greenhouse gases that trap heat in the atmosphere.

Worked examples

Burning coal in power plants releases \(CO_2\), which traps infrared radiation and raises Earth's average temperature by over \(1\,^\circ C\) since 1880.
Fossil fuel combustion adds greenhouse gases that increase heat retention, driving long-term warming.
Arctic sea ice extent has declined about 13% per decade since 1979, altering weather patterns and ocean currents globally.
Melting ice is both an effect of warming and a cause of further shifts in climate and weather.

Common mistakes

  • "Climate change" and "weather" mean the same thing.Weather is short-term; climate change refers to long-term shifts over decades. A cold week is weather; rising average temperatures over 50 years is climate change.
  • Climate change only means the planet is getting hotter everywhere all the time.Climate change includes shifts in temperature, precipitation, storms, and regional patterns. Some regions see more floods, others droughts; extremes increase even if averages rise.
  • Natural cycles alone explain recent rapid warming.Human activities—especially burning fossil fuels—are the main driver of warming since the mid-20th century. Natural factors change slowly; observed warming matches greenhouse gas increases from human sources.
