Definition

The places from which water is obtained, such as rivers, lakes, groundwater, glaciers, and rainfall. Understanding water sources is important for supplying communities and for managing this limited resource wisely.

Worked examples

A city draws drinking water from a nearby river, treating it at a plant before distribution.
Rivers are surface water sources that provide accessible water for many communities.
Farmers drill wells to tap groundwater stored in underground aquifers for irrigation.
Groundwater is a hidden water source reached by pumping from beneath the surface.
Rainwater is collected from rooftops into storage tanks in areas with seasonal rainfall.
Rainfall can be harvested directly as a renewable water source for homes and farms.

Common mistakes

  • Groundwater and surface water are completely separate and don't interact.Groundwater and surface water are connected; aquifers feed rivers and lakes. Water moves between underground and surface sources through the water cycle.
  • Glaciers are not a water source because they are frozen.Glaciers store freshwater and release it as meltwater for rivers and communities. Glacial melt is a critical water source, especially in mountain regions.
  • All water sources provide unlimited water for human use.Water sources are limited and can be depleted or polluted without careful management. Overuse, drought, and contamination threaten the availability of water sources.
