Definition

The process of finding solutions to challenges using reasoning, evidence, and testing. In science and design it involves identifying the problem, exploring possible solutions, trying them out, and evaluating the results.

Worked examples

A flashlight stops working. Check if batteries are dead (test), replace them (solution), then see if it lights up (evaluate).
Each step—identifying the cause, trying a fix, and checking the result—is part of problem solving.
Design challenge: build a boat from foil that holds the most pennies. Test different hull shapes, measure which holds more, improve the design.
Engineering uses problem solving to explore options, test prototypes, and refine based on evidence.

Common mistakes
