Definition

A step-by-step approach to solving problems by planning, building, testing, and improving a solution. The cycle is repeated, using the results of each test to refine the design until it meets the goal.

Worked examples

A student designs a boat to carry 20 pennies: she sketches plans, builds from foil, tests in water (it sinks at 12 pennies), then adds higher sides and retests successfully.
Each cycle—plan, build, test, improve—brings the design closer to meeting the goal.
Engineers create a bridge prototype, test its load capacity, find it fails at 500 N, redesign the supports, and retest until it holds 1000 N.
Testing reveals weaknesses; the results guide specific improvements in the next iteration.
