Definition
The planning and carrying out of complex experimental procedures that involve multiple steps, controls, and careful management of variables. Advanced design allows scientists to investigate more challenging questions reliably.
Worked examples
Testing a new fertilizer: set up identical plots with control (no fertilizer), treatment A (standard dose), and treatment B (double dose), measuring plant height weekly for 8 weeks.
Multiple treatment levels, a control group, and systematic data collection show advanced design.
Investigating battery life: test three brands at two temperatures (room temp and cold), with five trials per condition, controlling charge time and device load.

Common mistakes
- Changing multiple variables at once without tracking which causes the effect → Change one variable at a time, or use a factorial design to isolate each factor's impact Uncontrolled changes make it impossible to identify the true cause of results.
- Skipping a control group because the experiment already has multiple treatment groups → Always include a control to compare against and verify that treatments cause observed effects Without a baseline, you cannot tell if treatments produced real change or if results are coincidental.
- Running only one trial per condition to save time in a complex design → Replicate trials to account for random variation and ensure results are reliable Single trials can be flukes; replication reveals whether patterns are consistent.
