The selection and application of materials based on their properties. Engineers and designers match a material's characteristics, such as strength or waterproofing, to the demands of a task in order to build effective and safe products.
Worked examples
A bicycle frame is made from aluminum alloy because it is strong yet lightweight, making the bike easier to pedal and control.
The material's strength-to-weight ratio matches the need for durability without excess mass.
Raincoats use polyester or nylon coated with waterproof layers because these materials repel water while remaining flexible.
The waterproofing property is matched to the task of keeping the wearer dry in wet conditions.
