Definition

Everyday substances such as wood, metal, plastic, glass, and fabric, each recognised by its properties. Knowing the properties of familiar materials helps explain why each is chosen for particular objects, such as glass for windows because it is transparent.

Worked examples

Windows are made of glass because glass is transparent, letting light through while keeping wind and rain out.
Glass's transparency property makes it the right material for this purpose.
A metal spoon conducts heat quickly, so it gets hot in soup, while a wooden spoon stays cool.
Metal's high thermal conductivity differs from wood's low conductivity.
Rubber bands stretch and return to shape because rubber is flexible and elastic.
Rubber's elasticity property explains why it is chosen for items that need to stretch.
