Definition

How the properties of a material determine the purposes it is suited for. A material's hardness, flexibility, or ability to conduct heat or electricity makes it useful for specific jobs—metal for cooking pots because it conducts heat well, for example.

Worked examples

Metal cookware conducts heat quickly and evenly, so food cooks faster without hot spots.
The metal's thermal conductivity property makes it ideal for pots and pans.
Rubber gloves are flexible and electrically insulating, protecting hands from both chemicals and shocks.

Common mistakes

  • Wood is chosen for cutting boards only because it's cheap.Wood is chosen because it's hard enough to resist cuts yet gentle on knife edges, and naturally antibacterial. Material choice is based on functional properties, not just cost.
  • Any solid material can replace metal in electrical wires.Only materials with high electrical conductivity, like copper or aluminum, work for wires. Each job requires specific properties; conductivity is essential for wiring.
  • Plastic is always the best choice because it's lightweight.Plastic is chosen when flexibility, low cost, or insulation is needed, but it melts at high heat. Every material has limitations; match the property to the job's requirements.
