An opening overview of a topic that provides background and introduces the key ideas to be studied. It sets the context for more detailed learning that follows.
Worked examples
A lab report introduction states: "This experiment investigates how temperature affects the rate of enzyme activity, building on our understanding of proteins and chemical reactions."
The introduction gives context and identifies the key concept being explored.
A textbook chapter begins: "You've learned about cells. Now we'll explore how cells obtain energy through cellular respiration and photosynthesis."
The introduction connects prior knowledge to new topics that will follow.
Common mistakes
- Writing an introduction that includes detailed results or conclusions → Keep the introduction focused on background and what will be studied The introduction previews the topic; save results and analysis for later sections.
- Starting with no context, jumping directly into complex details → Begin with familiar concepts, then bridge to the new topic A good introduction builds from what students already know to what they'll learn.
