Things that produce heat, such as the Sun, fire, electrical appliances, and friction. Identifying heat sources helps explain how objects and environments are warmed and how thermal energy moves.

The Sun radiates light and heat that warms the Earth's surface, oceans, and atmosphere.
The Sun is the primary natural heat source for our planet, providing thermal energy through radiation.
Rubbing your hands together quickly produces heat from friction between the skin surfaces.
Friction converts mechanical energy into thermal energy, making your hands feel warmer.
A toaster uses electrical current flowing through metal coils to generate heat that browns bread.

Common mistakes
- Cold objects like ice are heat sources because they feel different from room temperature. → Only things that produce or release heat are heat sources; ice absorbs heat from surroundings. Heat sources add thermal energy to their environment, while cold objects take thermal energy away.
- Light bulbs are only light sources, not heat sources. → Light bulbs produce both light and heat as they convert electrical energy. Most light sources also release significant thermal energy, making them heat sources too.
