You will learn position words that help you describe where things are located. These words help you tell others exactly where to find objects and people around you.

Introduction

You will learn special words called position words that help you tell others where things are located. These words are like magic helpers that make it easy to describe exactly where you can find toys, books, or even your friends! When you use Basic Directions, position words make your directions even clearer.

What Are Position Words?

Position words are special words that tell you where something is. You use these words every day when you talk about where your toys are or where you sit at lunch. These words help you describe locations so others can find things too.

Position words work together with directions to help you understand space around you. When you learn to use Reading Simple Maps, position words become very important tools.

Common Position Words You Use

You already know many position words! Words like "on" tell you something sits on top of another thing. The word "under" means something is below or beneath another object.

Other helpful position words include "inside," "between," "behind," "in front of," "next to," and "toward." Each word helps you describe a different type of location or direction.

Key Terms & Definitions

On: When something sits on top of another thing, like a book on your desk or a butterfly on a flower.

Under: When something is below or beneath another thing, like your backpack under your desk or a toy under the bed.

Inside: When something goes into a container or space, like blocks inside a toy box or crayons inside an art box.

Between: When something is in the middle of two other things, like sitting between the swings and slide at the playground.

Behind: When something is in back of another thing, like standing behind a tree or walking behind your friend.

In front of: When something is facing another thing or positioned before it, like standing in front of a panda at the zoo.

Next to: When something is beside another thing, like sitting next to the slide at the playground.

Toward: When you move in the direction of something, like walking toward a sunflower to see a butterfly better.

In: When something is within or inside something else, like a toy duck floating in a pond.
