Learn Basic Directions and Find Your Way Around

You will learn basic direction words that help you find your way around and describe where things are located.

Introduction

You will learn about basic directions that help you find your way around every day. Direction words help you describe where things are and how to get places. You can use these words at home, at school, and on the playground to find things and tell others where to look.

What Are Basic Directions?

Basic directions are words that tell you which way to go or where something is. You use direction words when you look for your toys, walk to different places, or play games. These words help you and others know exactly where to find things.

Some directions tell you about up and down. Other directions tell you about left and right. You also have special directions called north, south, east, and west that help you find your way on maps and in the world.

Simple Direction Words

You can learn easy direction words first. Up means toward the sky or ceiling. Down means toward the ground or floor. Left is the direction of your left hand. Right is the direction of your right hand.

When you look up, you see the ceiling or sky above you. When you look down, you see the floor or ground below you. You can practice these directions by pointing up at the clouds or down at your shoes.

Position Words

Position words tell you exactly where something is compared to other things. Behind means on the back side of something where you cannot see it. In front of means facing something where you can see it clearly.

On top of means sitting above something or resting on the highest part. Under means below something or beneath it on the ground. You can practice with Position Words to get better at describing where things are.

Cardinal Directions

North, south, east, and west are special directions called cardinal directions. North means toward the top. South means toward the bottom. East means toward the right side. West means toward the left side.

You can remember that the sun comes up in the east each morning. North is like the top of a map. South is like the bottom of a map. These directions help you read maps and find places in the real world.

Key Terms & Definitions

Up: The direction toward the sky or ceiling above you, like when you look at flying birds or reach for something high.

Down: The direction toward the ground or floor below you, like when you look at your feet or pick up something that fell.

Left: The direction of your left hand when you hold both hands out in front of you.

Right: The direction of your right hand when you hold both hands out in front of you.

North: The cardinal direction that points toward the top of maps and helps you find your way.

South: The cardinal direction that points toward the bottom of maps, opposite of north.

East: The cardinal direction where the sun rises in the morning, toward the right side of maps.

West: The cardinal direction where the sun sets in the evening, toward the left side of maps.

Behind: The position on the back side of something where you cannot see it from the front.

In front of: The position facing something where you can see it clearly and directly.

On top of: The position above something or resting on the highest part of it.

Under: The position below something or beneath it, like under a tree or table.

Practice Activities

You can practice directions by playing treasure hunt games. Hide a toy and give directions like "look behind the chair" or "check under the table." You can also practice by pointing to different directions around your room or playground.

Try walking in different directions and saying the direction words out loud. Walk left to the window, then right to the door. Look up at the ceiling, then down at the floor. This helps you remember each direction word.

Getting Ready to Learn

You do not need to know anything special before learning basic directions. You already know how to look around and point to things. You can use your hands and eyes to practice pointing in different directions.

Start by learning the simple directions first, like up and down. Then you can learn left and right. After that, you will be ready to learn about north, south, east, and west.
