About the ASVAB Mechanical Comprehension subtest

Mechanical Comprehension (MC) is one of the ten subtests on the ASVAB — the U.S. military's enlistment aptitude test. It measures your understanding of mechanical and physical principles: how forces, simple machines and basic mechanisms work. MC isn't part of your AFQT, but it feeds the line (composite) scores the services use to qualify you for mechanical, technical and combat jobs. This free ASVAB Mechanical Comprehension practice test mirrors the real subtest, with a step-by-step video solution for every question so a wrong answer turns into a lesson.

What does ASVAB Mechanical Comprehension cover?

On the CAT-ASVAB, Mechanical Comprehension is 15 scored questions in 22 minutes. Questions test forces and motion, simple machines (levers, pulleys, gears, inclined planes), fluid and pressure principles such as hydraulics, and mechanical concepts like torque, friction and structural load. StudyPug covers all of these with adaptive practice and video lessons.

Is ASVAB Mechanical Comprehension hard, and where do test-takers struggle most?

Most test-takers struggle with mechanical advantage (how levers, pulleys and gears trade force for distance) and with applying force-and-motion ideas to a diagram. A quick diagnostic finds those gaps, then adaptive practice and worked examples build a reliable approach.

How is ASVAB Mechanical Comprehension scored?

Each ASVAB subtest is reported as a Standard Score, a scale where the average is 50 and most scores fall between 30 and 70. Mechanical Comprehension is not one of the four AFQT subtests, but its Standard Score feeds several job-qualifying line scores. Our practice tracks your readiness by topic.

What does Mechanical Comprehension actually test?

Officially, Mechanical Comprehension measures "knowledge of mechanical and physical principles," usually with a diagram. The official sample questions cover things like center of gravity, friction, air pressure and gear movement.

What score do I need on Mechanical Comprehension?

Mechanical Comprehension is not part of your AFQT, so it sets no enlistment minimum of its own. It comes back as a standard score, where 50 is average for a nationally representative sample of young adults, and it counts toward the service composites that decide which jobs you qualify for. Mechanical Comprehension counts toward the Air Force Mechanical composite, the Marine Corps Mechanical and General Technician composites, and several Navy composites. Ask your recruiter for the cutoff attached to the job you want.

Is Mechanical Comprehension the same on the computer and paper ASVAB?

Same content, different length. On the CAT-ASVAB it is 15 scored questions with 22 minutes; on the paper version it is 25 questions in 19 minutes. Each examinee also gets unscored tryout questions in two to four subtests, which raises the time limit for those subtests.
