About the ASVAB Auto & Shop Information subtest

Auto & Shop Information (split into Auto Information and Shop Information on the computer test) is part of the ASVAB — the U.S. military's enlistment aptitude test. It measures your knowledge of automobile technology and of tools, materials and shop practices. It isn't part of your AFQT, but it feeds the line (composite) scores the services use to qualify you for mechanical, vehicle and construction jobs. This free ASVAB Auto & Shop practice test mirrors the real subtest, with a step-by-step video solution for every question so a wrong answer turns into a lesson.

What does ASVAB Auto & Shop Information cover?

On the computer ASVAB, Auto Information and Shop Information are given separately (about 10 questions each); the paper test combines them into one Auto & Shop subtest. Together they cover automotive systems (engine, brakes, transmission, electrical), engine maintenance, hand and power tools, and shop materials and practices. StudyPug covers all of these with adaptive practice and video lessons.

Is ASVAB Auto & Shop Information hard, and where do test-takers struggle most?

If you've worked on cars or in a shop, a lot will feel familiar; if not, the challenge is breadth and unfamiliar terms. Most test-takers have a weak area — often engine internals or specialty tools. A quick diagnostic finds it, then targeted practice fills it in.

How is ASVAB Auto & Shop Information scored?

Each ASVAB subtest is reported as a Standard Score, a scale where the average is 50 and most scores fall between 30 and 70. Auto & Shop Information is not one of the four AFQT subtests, but its Standard Score feeds several job-qualifying line scores. Our practice tracks your readiness by topic.

What does Auto & Shop Information actually test?

It is two halves reported as one score. Officially they measure "knowledge of automobile technology" and "knowledge of tools and shop terminology and practices" — automotive systems and repair on one side, hand and power tools, materials and shop practice on the other.

What score do I need on Auto & Shop Information?

Auto & Shop Information is not part of your AFQT, so it sets no enlistment minimum of its own. It comes back as a standard score, where 50 is average for a nationally representative sample of young adults, and it counts toward the service composites that decide which jobs you qualify for. Auto & Shop Information counts toward the Air Force Mechanical composite and mechanical composites in the Marine Corps and Navy. Ask your recruiter for the cutoff attached to the job you want.

Why is Auto & Shop split in two on the computer ASVAB?

On the CAT-ASVAB, Auto Information (10 scored questions, 7 minutes) and Shop Information (10 scored questions, 6 minutes) are administered as two separately timed tests, then combined into the single AS score. On the paper version it is one test of 25 questions in 11 minutes. Either way you get one AS score.
