Skip Counting by Twos to Find Every Even Number
The fastest way to find even numbers on a number line is to skip count by twos starting at 0: \(0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, \dots\). Every number you land on while skip counting by 2 from 0 is even, and every number you jump over along the way is odd. This is the same skip counting idea used when building number sequences with 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, just applied to the steady pattern of twos.
How to Decide If a Number Is Even or Odd on a Number Line
Follow the same steps every time you check a number:
- Find the number on the number line.
- Start at 0 and skip count by twos toward that number.
- If you land exactly on the number while skip counting by 2, it is even.
- If the number falls between two skip counting landing spots, it is odd.
Worked Example: Is 13 Even or Odd?
Skip counting by twos from 0 gives \(0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14\). Since 12 and 14 are landing spots but 13 sits between them, 13 is odd. The same check works for any number: if skip counting by 2 from 0 ever lands exactly on it, the number is even; if it always falls between two landing spots, the number is odd.
