Definition
The use of instruments to record weather conditions, such as thermometers for temperature, rain gauges for precipitation, and anemometers for wind speed. Accurate measurements allow weather to be tracked, compared, and forecast.
Worked examples
A thermometer reads \(22^\circ\)C\(\) at 2 PM, then \(18^\circ\)C\(\) at 6 PM.
The thermometer measures temperature, allowing us to track how it changes over time.
A rain gauge collects \(15 \) mm\(\) of water after a storm.
The gauge measures precipitation amount, recording how much rain fell in that location.
An anemometer shows wind speed increasing from \(10 \) km/h\(\) to \(30 \) km/h\(\).
The anemometer measures wind speed, helping detect changes that may signal a weather front.
Common mistakes
- A barometer measures rainfall → A barometer measures air pressure; a rain gauge measures rainfall Barometers track pressure changes that help forecast weather, not precipitation amounts.
