Definition
The movement of air across the Earth's surface, caused by differences in air pressure as air moves from high-pressure to low-pressure areas. Wind varies in speed and direction and plays a major role in shaping weather and climate.
Worked examples
Air at the North Pole (high pressure, \(1025\) hPa) flows toward the equator (low pressure, \(1010\) hPa), creating steady polar winds.
Wind always moves from high to low pressure, carrying cold polar air toward warmer regions.
A sea breeze forms during the day when cooler air over the ocean (high pressure) flows inland to replace rising warm air over land (low pressure).
Local pressure differences between land and water drive predictable daily wind patterns.
Common mistakes
- Wind is caused by the Earth's rotation → Wind is caused by pressure differences; Earth's rotation only deflects its path Pressure gradients create wind; the Coriolis effect bends it but doesn't generate it.
- Air moves from low pressure to high pressure → Air moves from high pressure to low pressure Air flows down the pressure gradient, from where molecules are crowded to where they are sparse.
- Wind speed and air pressure are the same thing → Wind speed depends on how fast air moves; air pressure measures the force air exerts Greater pressure differences between areas create faster winds, but they measure different quantities.
