Definition
Categories of movement including linear (in a straight line), circular (around a centre), reciprocating (back and forth), and rotational (spinning). Recognising the type of motion helps describe and predict how an object will move.
Worked examples
A car driving down a highway follows linear motion.
The car travels in a straight line along the road.
A ceiling fan's blades demonstrate rotational motion.
The blades spin around a fixed central axis.
A playground swing exhibits reciprocating motion.
The swing moves back and forth along the same path repeatedly.
Common mistakes
- A ball rolling in a circle is linear motion because it keeps moving forward → A ball rolling in a circle is circular motion because it travels around a centre point Linear means straight-line motion only; moving around a centre is circular motion.
- A spinning top shows reciprocating motion because it moves → A spinning top shows rotational motion because it spins around its own axis Reciprocating is back-and-forth; spinning in place is rotational motion.
- A door opening and closing is rotational motion → A door opening and closing can be both rotational (around hinges) and reciprocating (back and forth) The door rotates around its hinges while also moving in a back-and-forth pattern.
