Definition

The different ways objects can move, such as in a straight line, along a curve, back and forth, or by spinning. Describing types of movement is a first step toward understanding motion and the forces that cause it.

Worked examples

A car driving down a highway travels in a straight line (linear motion).
This is the simplest type of movement — motion along a single straight path.
A child on a swing moves back and forth through the same path (oscillating motion).
Oscillating motion repeats regularly, moving forward and backward through a fixed point.
A spinning top rotates around its center axis (rotational motion).
Rotational motion occurs when an object turns around a fixed point or axis.

Common mistakes
