Definition
Life cycles in which the young develop directly into adults without a major change in body form. Animals such as mammals and birds grow larger and mature but keep the same basic body plan from birth, unlike insects that undergo metamorphosis.
Worked examples
A newborn kitten looks like a tiny adult cat — it has the same four legs, tail, ears, and whiskers, just smaller.
The kitten grows larger and matures but keeps the same basic body form throughout its life.
A chick hatches with feathers, wings, and a beak, and grows into an adult chicken with the same body plan.
Birds follow non-metamorphic development — young and adults share the same overall structure.
Common mistakes
- All animals with eggs undergo metamorphosis → Many egg-laying animals (birds, reptiles) have non-metamorphic life cycles Laying eggs does not mean metamorphosis; birds and reptiles hatch looking like small adults.
- Non-metamorphic animals are born fully grown → Non-metamorphic animals grow and mature but keep the same body plan They still develop and grow larger; they just don't change their basic body structure.
- Humans undergo metamorphosis because babies look different from adults → Humans have non-metamorphic development with the same basic body plan throughout life Growing and maturing is not metamorphosis; the body plan (head, limbs, organs) stays the same.
