Definition
The predictable ways in which living things grow and develop through stages. Some organisms change gradually, while others transform dramatically, as in metamorphosis. Recognising these patterns helps scientists compare how different species develop.
Worked examples
A butterfly egg hatches into a caterpillar, forms a chrysalis, then emerges as an adult butterfly.
This dramatic transformation through distinct stages is complete metamorphosis, a growth pattern in insects.
A human baby grows gradually into a child, then an adolescent, then an adult without changing body form.
