Living vs Non-living

Definition
The distinction between things that are alive and things that are not. Living things grow, use energy, reproduce, and respond to their surroundings, while non-living things such as rocks or water do not. Recognising this difference is one of the first steps in studying biology.
Worked examples
A sunflower seed grows into a tall plant, uses sunlight for energy, makes new seeds, and bends toward light.
The sunflower shows all the characteristics of living things: growth, energy use, reproduction, and response.
A rock sits on the ground and does not grow, eat, reproduce, or react to changes around it.
The rock is non-living because it lacks the key life processes that define living organisms.
Common mistakes
- Fire is living because it grows, uses energy, and responds to its environment. → Fire is non-living; it does not have cells, cannot reproduce on its own, or maintain homeostasis. Fire mimics some life traits but lacks cellular structure and true biological processes.
- A seed is non-living because it does not move or eat. → A seed is living; it is dormant but can still grow, respire, and develop into a plant. Living things can be inactive or dormant and still be classified as alive.
- Water is living because animals and plants need it to survive. → Water is non-living; being essential for life does not make something alive. Non-living things can support life without being living themselves.
