Definition

The real-world uses and effects of forces acting on objects. Understanding forces explains everyday situations such as why seatbelts protect passengers, how bridges bear loads, and why friction lets us walk without slipping.

Worked examples

A seatbelt applies a backward force on a passenger during sudden braking, preventing them from continuing forward at the car's original speed.
Inertia keeps the passenger moving; the seatbelt force stops them safely.
Bridge cables pull upward on the deck with tension forces, balancing the downward weight of vehicles and the bridge itself.
When upward and downward forces balance, the bridge stays in equilibrium.
Friction between shoe soles and the ground pushes backward on the ground and forward on your foot, letting you walk without slipping.
Without friction, your foot would slide backward and you couldn't push off.

Common mistakes

  • Forces only matter in machines or structures, not in everyday movement.Forces explain all motion and rest — walking, sitting, throwing, and riding all involve forces. Every change in motion or stability comes from forces acting on objects.
  • A heavier object always exerts more force than a lighter one.Force depends on mass and acceleration together, not just weight. A light object moving fast can exert a large force; force equals mass times acceleration.
