Utah 1st Grade Math: What Students Learn
Utah 1st grade math covers a wide range of foundational skills that students will build on throughout elementary school. Aligned to Utah Core Standards Math, the curriculum focuses on number sense, operations, measurement, and geometry.
Addition and Subtraction
First graders learn to add and subtract within 20, solve word problems, and apply properties of operations. They work with equations, understand the meaning of the equal sign, and practice finding unknown numbers in addition and subtraction problems. Fluency with facts within 10 is a key goal at this grade level.
Place Value and Number Sense
Students explore two-digit numbers by understanding tens and ones. They count to 120, compare two-digit numbers using >, =, and < symbols, and learn to mentally add or subtract 10 from any two-digit number.
- Count to 120 starting from any number
- Understand tens and ones in two-digit numbers
- Compare two-digit numbers with >, =, and <
- Add within 100 including two-digit and one-digit numbers
- Subtract multiples of 10 from multiples of 10
Measurement and Data
1st graders order objects by length, measure using whole number units, and tell time in hours and half-hours on both analog and digital clocks. They also organize and interpret data with up to three categories.
Geometry
Students identify defining attributes of shapes, compose two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes, and partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares — an early introduction to fractions.
