Utah Kindergarten Math: What Students Learn

Utah Kindergarten math lays the groundwork for all future math learning. Following the Utah Core Standards Math, Kindergarteners develop skills across five main areas: counting and cardinality, operations and algebraic thinking, number and operations in base ten, measurement and data, and geometry.

Counting and Number Sense

Students learn to count to 100 by ones and tens, count forward from any number, and write numerals from 0 to 20. They connect counting to cardinality — understanding that the last number counted tells how many objects are in a group. They also compare groups of objects and written numerals between 1 and 10 to determine which is greater, less than, or equal.

Addition and Subtraction

Kindergarten introduces addition and subtraction through hands-on methods including objects, fingers, drawings, and word problems. Students add and subtract within 10, fluently add and subtract within 5, and decompose numbers into pairs. They also learn to find the number that makes 10 when added to any number from 1 to 9.

  • Represent addition and subtraction with objects and drawings
  • Solve word problems within 10
  • Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 in multiple ways
  • Fluently add and subtract within 5

Base Ten: Numbers 11–19

Students compose and decompose numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and some further ones, building early understanding of place value that carries into 1st grade math.

Measurement and Data

Kindergarteners describe measurable attributes like length and weight, directly compare two objects using a shared attribute, and classify objects into categories by sorting and counting.

Geometry and Shapes

Students identify and name 2D and 3D shapes, describe their positions in the environment, and analyze similarities and differences between shapes. They also build and draw shapes, and compose simple shapes into larger ones.

StudyPug covers every one of these Kindergarten math topics with video lessons and practice problems aligned to the Utah Core Standards Math. Whether your child needs help with counting, addition, or shapes, you can find the right lesson and start practicing right away.
