5th Grade Math Topics in New York
New York 5th grade math covers a wide range of concepts aligned to the NYS Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards. Students work through operations and algebraic thinking, number and operations in base ten, fractions, measurement, data, and geometry. StudyPug has a video lesson and practice set for every one of these topics.
Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Students learn to use parentheses, brackets, and braces in numerical expressions and evaluate them correctly. They write and interpret simple expressions, and generate numerical patterns using two given rules. These skills form the foundation for algebra in later grades.
Number and Operations in Base Ten
5th graders explore place value in depth — understanding that each digit is 10 times the digit to its right and one-tenth the digit to its left. Students explain patterns in products when multiplying by powers of 10, read and write decimals to thousandths, round decimals to any place, and fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers. Division with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors is also covered.
Decimals
Students add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths. They connect decimal operations to whole-number strategies and apply them to real-world problems. These skills are directly tested on the New York Grade 5 State Math Test.
Fractions
A major focus of 5th grade math in New York is fractions. Students add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators, solve word problems involving fraction addition and subtraction, interpret a fraction as division, multiply fractions by fractions and whole numbers, and divide unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions. Mixed number multiplication is also introduced through real-world problems.
Measurement and Data
Students convert between different-sized units within the same measurement system and use line plots to display data sets with fractional measurements. Volume is introduced as an attribute of three-dimensional figures — students count unit cubes, and connect volume to multiplication and addition to solve real-world problems.
Geometry
5th graders use a pair of perpendicular number lines to define a coordinate system and graph points in the first quadrant. They also classify two-dimensional figures based on their properties and understand how categories of shapes relate to subcategories — for example, how all rectangles are parallelograms.
Preparing for the New York Grade 5 State Math Test
New York tests math in grades 3 through 8. The Grade 5 NY State Test draws from all the topics above. StudyPug aligns every lesson to the NYS Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards, so your child is always practicing exactly what will be assessed.
