About 1st Grade New York math

New York follows the New York Next Generation Math Standards, organized around operations and algebraic thinking, number and operations in base ten, measurement and data, and geometry. In 1st grade, students build fluency with addition and subtraction within 20, develop place value understanding for two-digit numbers, tell time to the half-hour, and explore shapes and equal shares.   • Operations and Algebraic Thinking: Adding and subtracting within 20 to solve word problems, adding three whole numbers, applying properties of operations, understanding the equal sign, and finding unknown values in equations.
  • Number and Operations in Base Ten: Counting to 120, understanding tens and ones in two-digit numbers, comparing two-digit numbers using >, =, and <, adding within 100, and subtracting multiples of 10.
  • Measurement and Data: Ordering objects by length, expressing length in whole units, telling and writing time in hours and half-hours, and organizing data into up to three categories.
  • Geometry: Identifying defining attributes of shapes, composing two- and three-dimensional shapes, and partitioning circles and rectangles into halves, fourths, and quarters.
