Florida 2nd Grade Math: What Students Learn

Florida's B.E.S.T. Standards for Mathematics set clear expectations for what 2nd graders should know by the end of the year. StudyPug covers every skill in the curriculum with focused video lessons and practice problems your child can use at home.

Numbers and Place Value

Students learn to read, write, and represent numbers up to 1,000 using standard form, word form, and expanded form. They compose and decompose three-digit numbers in multiple ways and compare whole numbers using place value understanding. Rounding to the nearest 10 is also introduced at this level.

Addition and Subtraction

2nd graders build fluency with addition facts to 20 and related subtraction facts. They add and subtract whole numbers up to 100 and solve one- and two-step word problems. Students also practice finding unknown values in addition and subtraction equations.

Multiplication, Division, and Even/Odd Numbers

Students explore the foundations of multiplication and division by identifying even and odd numbers and using equal groups. They determine unknowns in simple multiplication and division equations, preparing them for 3rd grade concepts.

Measurement and Data

  • Estimate and measure lengths using inches, feet, yards, centimeters, and meters
  • Compare lengths of two objects and find the difference
  • Tell time to the nearest five minutes using analog and digital clocks
  • Solve real-world problems involving money using dollar bills
  • Collect and interpret data using tally marks, tables, pictographs, and bar graphs

Geometry

Students identify and draw two-dimensional figures, categorize shapes by their sides and vertices, and explore lines of symmetry. They also partition shapes into equal parts and begin exploring perimeter by placing unit segments along the boundary of figures.
